Dette stammer fra tiden, hvor jeg gennemgik forvandlingen fra Jack the Lad til hvad det så end var, jeg blev til på min rejse mod dét, jeg er i dag. Deep Purple betød en stor forandring i mit liv, og derfor måtte jeg overveje, hvordan jeg ville tackle det.

Jeg var begyndt at meditere omkring et år før og var netop ved at få færten af det. I begyndelsen ret primitivt og uskolet, men der kom en smule håb, efterhånden som jeg fik en smule kontrol over mig selv; efter at have været ret overbevidst om, at jeg vidste alt indtil da – åh, den ungdoms dårskab.

Ved nærmere eftertanke har de fleste af de tidlige sange en dejlig naivitet over sig, og dette forsøg på at fjerne min mørke side var ret opløftende. Naturligvis skændes hr. Yin og fru Yang om mine tanker, men mit alter ego har opnået kontrol med min opførsel – det har taget længere tid, end jeg forventede, men jeg når målet.
